Whose Bailout

Today stocks surged on news the government will bail out beleaguered mortgage lenders Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. The Dow jumped 290 points (2.6%) but was not the only winner. Both Standard & Poor’s 500 and the Nasdaq composite also rose.

On Friday the Department of Labor announced that the nation’s unemployment rate is now at 6.1%. American employers cut 84,000 jobs last, further proof of just how bad the American economy is. Analysts, already predicting a rise in unemployment, believed the August numbers would be around 5.8%.
